The Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) has been our nation’s most successful conservation and recreation program for 52 years, but on September 30th, this program will expire unless it’s reauthorized by Congress.
LWCF supports local economies, provides infrastructure for public health, tourism and recreation, and increases access to the outdoors in all states and territories. LWCF has invested funds in every state and nearly every county of the U.S., and has likely contributed to a conservation or recreation project right in your own backyard.
In addition to protecting America’s iconic landscapes, national forests, wildlife refuges, historic and cultural sites, LWCF supports local playgrounds, ball fields and swimming pools. Maybe even yours.
Allowing LWCF to expire would also undermine the economic asset that is our federal, state, and local public lands. According to the Outdoor Industry Association, hunting, fishing, camping, and other outdoor recreation activities contribute a total of $887 billion annually to the U.S. economy, supporting 7.6 million jobs.
We cannot let this program expire for the millions of people who benefit from it, and for the future generations that deserve the same opportunities that we have to play, learn and explore from the great outdoors.
